Why Online Teaching?

The Woodlands, TX, USA

If any of you have taken maternity leave in the United States, you know that benefits here are pitiful.  As a teacher that works 9 months out of the year, but gets paid over 12, it's even more painful that I won't see a paycheck for a long while even after I return to work.  Now I know that I have been very fortunate to be financially able to take the full 12 weeks of maternity leave that I am entitled to -- and I don't take that granted for a second.  But during those precious and far in between naps my son was taking, I kept an eye out for a way for me to supplement our income while at home with our sweet son during maternity leave, and maybe as my sole way to contribute to our household income while being a stay-at-home mom in the future.  This is how VIPKid came into our lives.

If you're a teacher with a facebook account, there's no doubt that you've seen those ads on your news feed -- "Teach globally. Work locally.", "Make $14-22/hr teaching English online", and "Work when you want from the comfort of your own home - and in your PJs!".  I've seen these ads over the last several months and I've even seen teachers that I follow on Instagram post about how they've joined and then plea for you to join them.  And just like you probably did, I thought this was too good to be true!  Why are these teachers so desperate for me to join them??  Well, curiosity got the best of me and I decided to apply.  I can now say that I have been with VIPKid for 27 days, have taught 31 classes, and I am absolutely loving it!

I will be dedicating a few blog posts to my journey so far with VIPKid (like the application process, education requirements, tech requirements, pay structure, etc.) but if you'd like to start the application process in the meantime, you can use my referral link here or reach out to me with any questions you have!

The Teacher Mom

The Woodlands, TX, USA

Thanks for joining me in my new adventure of blogging! I'm Susan Dow - an elementary school classroom teacher, online ESL teacher, wife to Adam, and new mom to Nicholas. I'm starting this blog as my 15-week maternity leave nears its end. My hope is that this little blog of mine will be a place where I can share bits and pieces of my life as a wife, mom, and both a brick & mortar and online teacher.
